Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a club, regional and select team?

Club teams do not travel out of the general DFW area. We schedule all of our teams to practice 3 to 4 hours a week. A regional team travels within Texas to play in tournaments. This is a competitive team whose members possess the basic skills and are working on improving those skills and increasing their overall understanding of the game.

A select team travels within Texas and at least one trip out of state. This is a highly competitive team whose players are intermediate to advanced volleyball players. Again our focus is on skill improvement and the mental aspects of the game.

Why tryout?

Tryouts give us a chance to see how each player accepts feedback, deals with unusual situations, handles adversity, and adjusts to suggested changes. As a result of our assessment, players will be assigned to teams that reflect their skill level. We will try to offer everyone who tries out a place to play and everyone will receive extensive training and skill development.

What is the cost to tryout?

The cost to tryout is $50.00, which is non-refundable. Athletes must bring $50.00 cash or check payable to Select Set Volleyball Club to their first day of tryouts.

What should I bring to tryouts?

Bring your completed USAV membership registration form & the USAV medical release form from the North Texas Region (NTR) website. You should wear comfortable workout clothes, bring your shoes, ankle braces (if you use them), and a water bottle. Be sure to eat a meal at least an hour before the tryout.

How are tryouts conducted and players selected for each team?

Tryouts for each age group are held over two days to allow coaches to assess players' skills. The tryout fee covers both days. Several Select Set Volleyball coaches will be involved in the tryouts and selections. All players will be given an equal opportunity. No athlete will be offered a position without participating in the tryout process. Skill is not the only factor considered. Teams need to be balanced with all positions, so the position that you play may be a factor. Attitude and leadership are also taken into consideration.

What does it cost to play club volleyball?

Each team's dues depend primarily on the amount of practice time and the level and number of tournaments in which they participate. We strive to keep the dues feasible, without sacrificing quality. Costs generally range from $800 - $3800 depending on the team you play on. Your tuition pays for coaching salaries, gym rental, tournament entry fees, uniforms, registration fees, training fees, equipment and administrative expenses. Your tuition does not include payment of hotel or food expenses for those teams that travel.

Are there payment options?

Families are asked to pay all season fees by check. Season fees will be collected in monthly checks starting in November through the last month of the team's season (5-8 months). On the day of tryouts, monthly payments for November and December will be collected. The remainder of the monthly payments (post-dated checks dated the 1st of each month) will be due by January 1, 2009 to cover entire season fee. Please make checks payable to Select Set Volleyball Club.

When are practices held?

Specific practice times will be determined once teams have been selected. Generally two days a week, Monday - Friday between 6:00pm - 10:00pm.

Is playing time guaranteed?

Equal practice time is what is being paid for in the fees. Playing time of 20% is guaranteed for tournament play. Playing time is determined by ability, attendance, attitude, position the athlete plays, and the level of tournament.

How long is the club season?

Tryouts are are held in late October and early November with practices starting shortly thereafter. Tournament play starts in December/January and ends
