Select Set Volleyball Team Structure

We are organized into three divisions: Club, Regional and Select. The differences between the divisions are based primarily on the expected level of competition for the players. The Regional and Select level teams are entered into tournaments where historically we have found a higher caliber team and a higher level of play. Every division will have competitive teams for that level but remember that at the club level our focus is on ensuring a proper foundation to play volleyball whereas at the regional and select level we expect the players to be able to properly execute the fundamental aspects of the game so that we can concentrate how best to use all of the skills on a team. We may or may not form a select team; to do so will require us to have the right number of athletes with the right mixture of skills, attitude and aptitude. Regional and select teams are scheduled to practice twice a week. Limited Club Team: These teams will play in 6 tournaments and will end their season in late March. We offer this team level to those players and parents who want to play but who have less time to devote to volleyball or are unsure that volleyball is "for them." Generally this level of Select Set participation appeals to the parents of the younger players (10 through 14). This is a developmental level where participation during tournaments is relatively even throughout the season. Everyone on these teams should play an approximately equal amount of time. Our emphasis is on improving skills and developing the fundamentals necessary to enjoy the game and to compete.

Club: Club teams will play in 7 or 8 tournaments. We ask that the players commit to coming to practice and to attending all of the tournaments. Teams play in tournaments within the North Texas area and will have some emphasis on the local multi-day events. Play ends in mid to late April. This is a developmental level where participation during tournaments is relatively even throughout the season. Everyone on these teams should play an approximately equal amount of time. Our emphasis is on improving skills and developing the fundamentals necessary to enjoy the game and to compete.

Regional: Players on regional teams must possess the basic skills of volleyball as well as the right attitude (to learn, be a team-player) and the right aptitude (to change, to listen to the coach). Regional teams play in multi-day events within the North Texas Region and will travel to some multi-day events outside of the metroplex. We anticipate the number of tournaments your child will play in will range from 8 to 10, with the possibility of overnight stays. The season will end in early May at the Regional championship tournament. This level of our club will concentrate on skill improvement, team communications, and teamwork for the first half of the season and then move its attention to fielding the most competitive team possible while focusing on tactics and strategy. In the first half of the season we will follow the participation rule where everyone should receive a fairly equal amount of playing time. By mid-February we will shift our focus to fielding the most competitive team possible. Once this happens, everyone will compete for tournament playing time. Regional teams are scheduled to compete in more challenging tournaments.

Select: Play in multi-day events within the North Texas region, travel to multi-day events within Texas, and at least one in-season out of state national qualifying tournament. We anticipate the number of tournaments will be around 10. The season may end with a trip to AAU National tournament in Orlando, Florida in mid June 2010. This is a competitive team where we put our best team forward week after week. We have no participation rule; playing time is entirely up to the coach. Select teams will be scheduled to play in challenging tournaments like the Cross Court Classic, Colorado Crossroads, Lone Star Classic, Lone Star Regional and end the season with AAU Nationals in Orlando or the JOVD tournament in Nashville, TN. We will not put together a select national-level team unless we believe we can compete at that level.

Extending the Season

Teams can have the opportunity to extend their season. To accommodate these requests, if the parents of a team wish to extend the team's season, the team parent will need to schedule a meeting with the Executive Director and at least one parent of each player. This meeting should occur before February 22 to allow time for appropriate adjustments to scheduling and fees.

Tournament Schedules

In early December, we will provide you with a tournament schedule. We reserve the right to adjust this schedule as necessary based upon team preparedness, player commitment, tuition payment receipts, and unforeseen circumstances. In the event a tournament is missed or cancelled, we will make every reasonable effort to replace it. If we cannot replace the tournament, we will not issue a refund or a discount. Tournament cancellations are beyond our control; generally these occur when an age group does not have enough teams committed to the tournament.

Time Commitments

Players must attend practices and tournaments. Please adjust your personal schedules to meet these requirements. Failure to attend practice and/or tournaments will most likely result in decreased playing time. Players on regional and select teams must meet the stringent requirements of this level of competition. Players who miss practice or tournaments because of participation in another sport or activity may suffer the consequences. Additionally, for regional and select teams, we expect our players to maintain at least a "B" average in their studies. Keeping up with academic school work is as important as playing volleyball.

Travel and Lodging

Select Set covers the lodging for the coaches only. Parents are responsible for their lodging and the lodging of their player(s). The parents are also responsible for all transportation expenses for their child. Due to issues of liability and parents making last minute travel adjustments, Select Set will not pay for the rooms for players. We know that we can get a discount for the rooms if we block a sufficient number of room nights. Therefore, Select Set will find an appropriate hotel and book the rooms for a short period of time. Each parent will then need to call the hotel to pay for their reservation. Select Set Volleyball does not pay for nor schedule the player's transportation.

Team Parent

We ask that each team have a team parent who serves as the representative for that team. Generally, this parent is responsible for club communication, arranging and managing the food and snacks and communicating issues with the Select Set staff. Regional and Select teams may also need a travel coordinator in addition to a team parent.

Fees

Fees cover the cost of running the club: uniforms (not including shoes), bags, coaches' salaries, court rental, USAV registration and associated fees, volleyballs, equipment, tournament entry fees, administrative costs, and other ancillary costs.

Financial Obligations

Select Set Volleyball Club, like any other business, runs on having sufficient funds and the proper cash flow. Your payments are due in full and on-time. Payment is due on the 1st of the month and is late on the 5th. Failure to meet these obligations will result in the affected player losing the privileges to practice and to play in tournaments until your account is current. If you join Select Set Volleyball, you are committed to pay the entire annual club fee. Checks or money orders must be made out to Select Set Volleyball and mailed to 2124 Acorn Bend, Denton, TX 76210. You may pay via credit card. If so, please contact Carmen Carradine. Please do NOT give payments to our coaches.

Fundraisers

Your team may decide to hold a fundraiser to offset costs. Select Set encourages teams to work together to accomplish goals. Any fundraiser using the Select Set Volleyball Club name must be approved prior to its announcement.

Tryouts and Team Formation

Essentially our tryouts are an assessment of current skills, identification of playing potential, observing court movement and court sense, and a look at attitude, desire, and dedication. At the end of the try-out session, we will offer players a spot on a team or, if still available, an invitation to the traveling team try-out. Our goal is to put 9 players on each team; however, we reserve the right to put up to 12 players per team.

The Director of Coaches and her staff will make specific team coaching assignments at a time most beneficial to the operation of the club. We do not promise any player that she may play for a specific coach as we do not promise coaches that they may coach a specific team or age group. Our goal is to line up the right players on the right team with the right coach.

Select Set will schedule a time for equipment disbursement, for parents to complete necessary paperwork, and for team and individual photos. Although subject to change, our paperwork and uniform try-on sessions will be in November just before Thanksgiving vacation. The specific times and location will be announced later.

November and December Practice

Athletes that play volleyball year round tend to experience increases in fatigue, injuries, and they lose enthusiasm for the sport. This overall condition is directly related to insufficient down time to heal, and to recoup physically, mentally, and emotionally. The typical volleyball schedule begins with school play August through October. November starts club season which runs until May (or July). In the summer players attends two to four volleyball camps and then start the school season all over again.

We all need to remember that these young athletes are still growing and require rest as well as down time. College coaches state that the incoming freshman are "all beat up" and have not had a break from volleyball since they were 10 or 12. To that end, this club chooses not to practice until after the Thanksgiving holidays and we choose to have low-impact training during the first two to three weeks of December. This simply means that when the girls come to practice we may conduct team building exercises, discuss volleyball, learn about nutrition, and study our offense and defense. Generally speaking we will not enter tournaments until January.

Meaningful playing time

Meaningful playing time does not mean equal playing time. However, early in the season we highly encourage our coaches to play everyone as much as possible so that by mid-February our coaches can establish the best possible rotation for the team. Our coaches have the discretion of playing their most productive and effective team members. Playing time is also influenced by practice attendance, timeliness, attitude, work ethic and the status of club dues. Please refer to the above paragraphs describing the Select Set levels of play: club, regional and select.

Conduct

At all tournament events we expect our staff, coaches, players and parents to display respect, sportsmanship and dignity regardless of the results of play, the conditions of play or the efforts and behavior of others. Additionally, during all tournaments we expect the players to stay together, to eat together and hang out together as a team. We have found that this helps build a team. Without this social connection we simply do not have a team. We ask that the parents work with us on these team building areas. This is one of the great benefits of club sports!

During all overnight trips, supervision of the players is the responsibility of the parents. During these out of town trips, the head coach may establish a curfew, have a meeting or conduct some team building exercises. We expect the parents to support these activities. In any case, inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated and players who violate this policy will be sent home and may be dismissed from the club.

Issues

Parents are strictly forbidden to discuss issues with a coach during tournament play. If your child has an issue with the team or coach, the child must first address that issue with her/his coach. This is one of the ways we can help the players learn responsibility. To help our players become responsible adults, we ask that the players take control of their own situation. If the parent gets involved too soon, the player has lost the opportunity to learn, to grow and to mature. If a parent has issues about a coach or his or her child, speak with Coach Barberee, our Director of Coaches. If, after talking with Coach Barberee, you feel as though you were not completely understood, then ask Coach Barberee to set up a meeting with you and the Executive Director.

End of Season

We encourage each team to have an end of season gathering where the parents, coaches and players may share some stories and end the season positively.

Tuition

For all the limited club teams the tuition can range from $800 to $1000, for our club teams the tuition is $1000 To $1300; for the regional teams the tuition is $1500 to $2800, and tuition for the select teams is to be determined if we can put together the right competitive team. We offer a monthly payment system. Each parent will be given their own payment schedule after they make their initial payment. Specific payment schedules will be attached to this document.

Refunds

All payments made to Select Set Volleyball are non-refundable.
